Paracatu mixes art and recycling at local schools

What do you get when you mix 550 children and recyclables? Art projects!

As part of the Integrar community program, Kinross Paracatu hosted workshops for children from nine local schools to teach them a new way of reusing materials that would otherwise be thrown in the garbage.

Bottles, cardboard, old CDs and milk cartons were just some of the items that the children used to craft their masterpieces.

“Instilling the importance of recycling and re-using products from an early age is key. These workshops have taught the children to look at these items in a different way rather than throwing them in the garbage,” said Ana Maria Ferreira Cunha, Communications and Community Manager, Paracatu.

The final products ranged from pictures, checkerboards, puppets, toys and ornaments. The art classes culminated in a final exhibition that was open to the public. The series of workshops launched the start of environmental education classes in the surrounding elementary schools.
